It turns out that they were following the directions that came with the plant. The directions said in essence, "give the plant a cup of water every day and the plant is gonna die and there's nothing you can do about it." Nothing to do about it? How about not following those devious instructions. Put that plant in a clay pot with drainage, don't over water and I guarantee that the plant won't die. Those marketing bastards.
